Imagine the future of DVD as an entertainment ecosystem, where content is securely owned and saved on a personal cloud.
Now, as the Digital Versatile Database, it is free from ads and subscriptions. The new DVD is a place where people can own their entertainment again.
Context
Between VHS and streaming, DVDs enjoyed only a 13-year heyday. During which, I unknowingly built memories that shaped my future nostalgia, expanded my media references, and watched my dad amass a collection of over 3,000 discs.
Today, with many homes still holding onto dusty old technology, there’s a gap between past and current media formats. What might a digitized DVD collection look like?
What if we could "rip" discs again—but onto the cloud?
What if we could buy once and truly own our favorite movies and music?
The new DVD industry:
The crossover between digital streaming and cloud storage
The new DVD mission:
Uniting people through elevated entertainment and personal media ownership.
VR Homepage: Dashboard
The dashboard is designed to feel open and social, featuring friends on the sidebar and an AI assistant (hello amorphous blob) in the corner.
Bring people together: Watch Party
Statistics show that half of all TV watchers typically watch alone (ahem, binge-watching), and this leads to several negative effects including lower lifespan. To enhance connection, I focused on creating a more social experience around viewing content, where we can enjoy both the smiles of loved ones and the content in the same view.
Data Organization: The Dial
Reimagining the information architecture of a DVD collection was the most fun I had on this project. I was inspired by my dad's meticulously alphabetized and categorized DVD folders growing up.
In a perfect prototype, as the dial spins around left and right, each folder 'column' is also vertically scrollable via eye tracking. This will give a sense of depth and expanse. Each database can have as many columns and dials as you want.
A look at the dashboard design process
Each file is a story that should feel like a cozy memory, nostalgic for the old technology
